Cultivating Legal Expertise and Illuminating Virtue corresponds to the “knowledge” dimension of the university motto, representing the process of learning and self-cultivation through the study of law. “Illuminating Virtue” derives from the Great Learning: “The Way of Great Learning lies in illuminating luminous virtue, in renovating the people, and in resting in the highest excellence.”
Pursuing Perseverance and Serving Society aligns with the “action” dimension of the university motto, embodying the commitment to contribute to the world with broad-mindedness and resolute determination, returning one’s learning to society. “Pursuing Perseverance” originates from the Analects: “The scholar may not be without breadth of mind and vigorous endurance. His burden is heavy and his course is long. Perfect virtue is the burden which he considers it is his to sustain—is it not heavy? Only with death does his course stop—is it not long?” Zhu Xi annotated: “Without breadth of mind, one cannot bear its weight; without vigorous endurance, one cannot journey its distance.”
